This Weekend!

The
HPT Grand Prix! is coming up this saturday night. Perhaps the most loved course in the KC area. Its under the lights with a mix of gravel, dirt, grass, pavement, its got it all. The race is in Topeka and definitely worth the trip. Its also part of Series 60 which is the biggest series in the KC metro area.

Sunday is the De Stad Cross Cup. Expect a good cobble climb, steep run-ups, and sand.

Still waiting on results from Joule's and Veteran's Cross.
Sorry, courses were way to bumpy for helmet cams.

Race Sunday!

Cross Out Cancer is this Sunday. The race will be held at Shawnee Mission Park.

If you want to race, be sure to get there early and register at least 30 minutes before the start of the race.

There are lots of races for beginner Cat 4's. At 10am its the true beginners cat 4 race. At 12:00, its the 35+ b's cat 4 only, this means that if you are older than 35 and are a beginner/cat4, you can race this too. It will be a slightly slower race/more easy than the cat 4 at 10. If you do well at either of these races, or simply want a bigger challenge, then you may race 3/4 race at 2:00. This race is a combined field of 3's and 4's so a mix of experienced and inexperienced riders.

Women Cat 4 beginners are racing at 12:00 with Junior boys/girls and 35+ 4's. You don't all start together, you start separately, but you are on the course at the same time, just racing different races...

Single Speed

Video from Single Speed World Championships in Portland, it is in Seattle this year.

If you are a beginner, Single Speed is not a bad option. I would recommend it actually. You get a much lighter, stronger bike for less money. You just gotta get a good gear and you are off. Not having gears to shift gives you a more level head during the race so you can focus on other riders and navigating your bike.

Single speed bikes also have great mud clearance and less of a chance to have a mechanical. It is also safe to say that replacement costs are much less. Say you crash your drive side on geared bike, you are out a derailleur, hanger, maybe bent chain...$100 at least, but not with a single speed.

You can buy a descent new ss cx bike for about $500, a great one for $800, or a used one cheaper than both.

Race for Free in Midtown.

Racing this Weekend/Flyer Breakdown.

Joe F. and Jeremy H. put on an excellent series called Boss Cross. The first two races are this saturday and sunday.

Click here to get to their blog.

The race is right by the Argosy Casino, just over the river, they have good directions.

Sometimes, flyers are hard to read for people just getting into racing.

If you are a man and a beginner, then you are a cat 4 cyclocrosser. This race is at 1:00pm and is 40minutes long. If you are over the age of 40, you may race with the masters cat 4 riders which start at the same time, 1:00pm. If you are planning on racing this race, please register by 12:00, have your jersey and number pinned by 12:30 and get a good warm up in. It is also encouraging to pre ride the course.

DO NOT PRE-RIDE the course when there is a race in progress, the judges will dq you just like they did at KC CUP. Please ask an official before pre riding.

If you are a beginner and are racing a single speed bike, there is also the option to race the Single speed class. It is a much faster class than the cat 4 category, but fun just the same.

For the women, it is the same deal, just know that your race is at 12:00, so come early and ready to have fun.

Racing during the week.

No cost to race, no prizes, 1 category. Have fun!

Kansas City Cup

This race, held out in swope park by the MTN. Bike trails(click),was a very technical course. Very fun with lots of single track, plenty of room to recover, and a few logs to jump.

By going to http://kscycling.org/ you can see the race results to the left and the upcoming races to the right.

As you can see in the video, the start of the race is pretty important. You want to get out in front in a hurry because passing people in corners is tough. The person in the video missed his pedal at the start and wasn't clipped in till the top of the hill, this being the first race of the season, we'll let him slide and hopefully improve.

There was also some barrier hopping going on in this race. The barriers for KC Cup were the smallest legal barriers. Still, a lot of people hurt themselves trying to clear all of them and the rider in the video opted to run em.

After the race there was plenty of beer and food left, key to a great event.
